He celebrated his 80th birthday in January 2025, an occasion that was widely covered by Indian news outlets given his stature as the country’s longest-serving National Security Advisor.
Ajit Doval Family and Education
Ajit Doval comes from a family with a strong military and nationalist tradition, hailing from the hill region of Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand. His father worked as a school teacher, known for his integrity and discipline, which is often said to have instilled in Doval a deep sense of patriotism and national duty from an early age. He is married to Aruni Doval, and the couple married in 1972. They have two sons, including Shaurya Doval, who is known for his own public profile in business and policy circles.
For his education, Doval’s early schooling took place in Delhi and Ajmer, including time spent at a disciplined, military-style educational institution, which is often linked to the strong sense of order and discipline he carried into his later career. He went on to complete a Master’s degree in Economics from Agra University, now known as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University. He later pursued an M.Phil from the National Defence College in New Delhi, adding a strategic and military dimension to his academic training that would go on to shape his approach to national security work.
Ajit Doval Career
Ajit Doval’s career began in the Indian Police Service, from which he later moved into intelligence work, eventually becoming one of the country’s most capable and respected field operatives. Over the course of his career, he spent around seven years undercover in Pakistan during the 1970s and 1980s, gathering intelligence under highly dangerous conditions, an experience that has since become the stuff of legend within India’s security circles.
One of the defining moments of his early career came in 1988, during Operation Black Thunder II, a security operation aimed at flushing out militants from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. For his role in this operation, Doval was awarded the Kirti Chakra, a top peacetime gallantry award, making him the youngest police officer in India at the time to receive this honour. After spending over a decade leading the operations wing of the Intelligence Bureau, he went on to serve as its Director from 2004 to 2005, capping off a distinguished career within India’s domestic intelligence apparatus.
Following his retirement from government service, Doval remained active in India’s strategic policy space, writing editorial pieces for leading newspapers and journals and delivering lectures on national security challenges at prestigious institutions, including the IISS in London, Capitol Hill in Washington DC, the University of Melbourne, the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
His most prominent role came on 30 May 2014, when he was appointed as India’s fifth National Security Advisor under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a position he has now held continuously for over a decade, making him the longest serving NSA in the country’s history. In this role, Doval has overseen some of India’s most significant security operations, including the September 2016 surgical strikes, the February 2019 Balakot airstrikes, the resolution of the Doklam standoff with China, and the 2025 Operation Sindoor. He has also played an important part in India’s high level diplomatic engagements, including discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on border peace, meetings with the Saudi Foreign Minister on energy security and maritime cooperation, and talks with senior US officials on strategic partnership matters.
Ajit Doval Wife
Ajit Doval is married to Aruni Doval, and the couple has been married since 1972. Details about their married life have largely remained private, in keeping with the low public profile that Doval has maintained throughout his career, despite his significant influence on India’s national security and foreign policy.
Ajit Doval Net Worth
There is no officially confirmed net worth figure available for Ajit Doval. As a senior government official holding Cabinet rank, his income would primarily come from his official salary and associated government allowances, rather than from any independent business or commercial ventures.
Controversy
Ajit Doval’s approach to national security, particularly his strategy of what has been described as “muscular power” in handling the Kashmir conflict, has drawn both strong support and criticism over the years. Former Research and Analysis Wing chief A. S. Dulat has publicly described Doval as “hawkish” for his hardline positions on border disputes with China and has critiqued his doctrine for handling the Kashmir conflict with Pakistan in his own writings. Despite such criticism from certain quarters, Doval continues to be widely regarded within the Indian establishment as one of the key architects of the country’s modern national security strategy.
Lifestyle
Ajit Doval is known for maintaining an unusually low public profile for someone in such a high level government position, rarely giving interviews or making public statements outside of his official capacity. His life has largely been shaped by decades of intelligence and security work, and even in his eighties, he remains actively engaged in high level strategic decision-making, reflecting a disciplined and duty focused approach to both his career and personal life.
Ajit Doval Social Media
Ajit Doval does not maintain a widely known personal social media presence like instagram, which is consistent with his low profile public image and the sensitive nature of his role as National Security Advisor.
